The Human Cost.
Caused by the floods of the 22nd of november 2008 in the Highlands of Panama.
In the area of Volcan, Paso Ancho and Cerro Punta 4 people died and 7 people are still missing. Various search teams have gone out to look for them.
192 people lost their homes and all their belongings. They are being taken for by the volunteers of the "Cruz Roja Panameña".
The areas of Boquete and Bocas del Toro were even worse affected.
The local church in Paso Ancho has become the distribution center for the donations made by the locals.
Like:
- Clothing (There is still a big need for under ware (man, woman and children's.)
- Food
- Bottled water
- Blankets
The local school in Paso Ancho has been converted into a shelter of the now homeless.
The Cruz Roja Panameña has been overwhelmed by this flooding.
The flooding in Volcan is just one area in Panama. The areas of Bocas del Toro (at the moment completely isolated from the rest of Panama because of landslides) and Boquete were hit even harder.

As always the poorest people suffer and loose the most.
The get a better idea:
Remember that house you saw on the riverbank in Cerrro Punta, that lost two bedrooms and its garden? Its owners had their house well insured and the insurance company is at this moment evaluating the damages to reimburse the owners who then will reconstruct their house without any major problems. Just some annoying inconveniences.
But all the people in the pictures above lost their home and all their belongings and live on the official minimum salary in Panamá of $8,01 per day, if they have a job at all.
How are they going to put their life back together again?
